Why my parents make me proud...

my mom is taking sign language, and my dad is the biggest supporter of local hockey I've ever seen... plus he won the 50/50 Saturday night at the Border Kings game; $1800! But that's not why I'm proud of him!!!

One more day of training and I'm on a four day weekend!!! Going up to the city Friday to see Paulette and introduce our puppies!

Bag of smashed @$$holes

That's a good description of how I've been feeling lately... Got another cold just before the weekend. I think between the cold and "snow mold" I've more then blown my share of noses! Didn't do hardly anything training wise this past weekend. It was still really busy. I'm really struggling to figure out what workout (if any) I can fit in before I go to work in the mornings. I have to be out of the house by 6:20 am... Gauge usually gets me up around 5... I definitely have a morning dog!

Great brick workout tonight...

Almost Quitting Time!!!

The past couple days I've been slowly getting ANOTHER cold... I really hope that I get rid of it in the next 24 hrs... I've got a three day weekend coming up w/ lots of things to do! And it's supposed to be BEAUTIFUL this weekend!

I've got a LSD bike and run due this weekend... the tri group pretty much fell apart since Lori left last week for Phenox for two months. I think a lot of people were getting burned out, and this week has become an unplanned rest week. That's okay w/ me!

New Job...

Well I shouldn't suffer from Alzheimer's anytime soon if it is caused by lack of new brain challenges... Two new jobs in 6 months... I have definitely learned my share of new things lately. Learning curve at Husky is quite steep... figuring out the SCADA system, response to alarms, etc, etc... and my least favorite... putting names to faces!

My new job also means figuring out a new workout schedule. I used to get a bike in b/f work, but that's not very likely when I have to leave home at 6:20 am to get to work at 7. I did some pilates & abs this AM before work... Gauge made them interesting; he thought attacking my toes would be fun this morning!

10 KM St. Patrick

Yesterday in the city it was a balmy 10 C... this morning was -13 w/ a windchill of -20... Race course was 80 % ice. Not a very good excuse I know... but I'm going to use it. I still managed to come in unofficially 45:10. I'll get to the race report sometime this week. Tomorrow is my first day with Husky.
Our little puppy isn't so little anymore...

Pea Soup- Just for Michelle Ingrey!!!

Pea Soup
- 1 medium sized onion; diced
- 5 tsp olive oil
- 1 garlic clove; minced
- 1 ltr chkn stock
- 1 bag frozen peas
- 1 package frozen spinach
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Salt & Pepper
- Parmesan cheese

Heat up in a large frying pan or pot the oil. Add the onion and garlic. Fry until cooked through. Add the ckn stock and bring to a boil. Add the peas and spinach, bringing stock to a boil again. Add lemon juice, S & P, then transfer into a blender. Blend until a consistent green color throughout... no darker green chunks. Put back on low heat until ready to serve. You can adjust consistency of the soup by adding more chkn stock or water.

We served this with melted shredded Parmesan cheese; just heat up a frying pan on the stove. Spread the cheese around to resemble a snow flake, heat until golden, flip over to other side to brown, then remove from stove. Went really well w/ the soup.

Goodbye to Weatherford

Well, it's my last day... surprisingly the last 2 weeks went by faster then expected. I'm going to miss a lot of people here... made some good friendships which I hope will continue after I leave. Leaving was never personal; my new job has a better schedule/days off, and pay... I didn't get a post secondary education so I could do a job that didn't utilize it or my previous experience. Plus who would have thought that I would ever put together drive heads, stuffing boxes, skids and engines??? I certainly never thought I would. I know that my experience here will be very valuable to what ever I do in the future... makes me think back to my summer student experience for NAIT working in a gas plant in Swan Hills where I learned "lefty-loosey, righty-tighty" and that pipe stretchers don't exist.

In other news, I think I'm slowly coming down w/ a cold that everyone else in Lloydminster seems to be suffering from. I woke up totally congested and with a head ache this morning. Hopefully by Sunday morning I will be 100%.

Tonight we are going to Adam and Lacey's to play some cards and take Gauge to see his girlfriend "Dori" Teasdales 2 yr old female lab-collie cross who seems to have taken a liking Gauge as well!

I'm tapering for the race on Sunday, so not much activity planned for the next few days other then wandering around the boat show in Edmonton on Saturday.

Lori has got me buzzing...

I know that this is my second post for the day but I just got off the phone w/ Lori and we were talking about my race schedule for this summer... I don't have much at all planned as far a races go;
-July
Canada Day 15 km
GWN 1/2; cycling part of a team
Sylvan Lake 1/2
-August
ING 1/2 marathon

But today she suggested that I seriously consider doing Washington 70.3 race July 8... She's planning on doing it as well and we would fly to Vancouver then drive to Lake Stevens, WA. I'm starting to seriously consider it...

Try to keep your mind out of the gutter...

Last night at swimming I remember my swim coach's mantra to say while swimming... "long and loose and full of juice." I was trying to convince myself that my stroke was exactly that... but I highly doubt that it looked that way. It was probably more short and tight and lacking... but our main set was 20 x 50m and I held 40 seconds on each 50 m for the entire set. Some of the 50 m's towards the end I was sure were slow, but I still kept coming in on 40 seconds, surprisingly.

Speaking of the gutter, yesterday one of my co-workers prank called our new receptionist and got her to page "Jack Enhoff, line one, Jack Enhoff"...

I've have been completely exhausted this week... I ended up sleeping in this morning, but I still feel really tired, even with the extra rest.

Tonight is bike/run/strength brick with Lori.

Happy Birthday Paulette!

Hope you have a wonderful day Paulette! Can't wait to get up to the city and spend a weekend with you... I miss our weekend get togethers!

Last night's workout was good; 30 min steady, then 6 x (6 min bike, 4 min run, 5 min strength exercise)... it was a long workout, but really good. I felt strong every time off the bike on to the run. Lori was getting us to practice leaving our bike cleats on the petals every time we switched into our running shoes. I did it, but have no intentions of doing it at an actual race. I think I'm much faster just to pedal up to the dismount, hop off and run in my cleats to my transition area. I had smoking fast transitions last year at Sylvan lake half, and I definitely didn't try pedal and put my cleats on/off at the same time.

Not sure if I'm going to get a workout in tonight. Mom, Dad, Grandma Garton, Sabrina, Shaun & Dylan are coming over after work for Brent's Birthday.

Weekend Re-Cap

Like I was predicting on Friday, the weekend lived up to its crazy-busy expectations. I think everything is so much harder now that I feel like I'm incorrectly training Gauge all day long. I was telling one of my former Enbridge co-workers, Su, about how I feel that "NO" has lost all effectiveness. This morning I was re-reading "How to be your Dog's Best friend" by the Monks of New Skete, and they recommend replacing discipline w/ a distraction, such as a chew toy... This morning I get an email from Su suggesting I do just that as it's what she did w/ her dog Shelby. I know one of Gauge's biggest problems is TOOOOOO much energy! And a lot of his bad behaviour is my fault for not wearing him out enough. Now that it has warmed up there is no excuse not to be taking him on walks 2-3 times a day.

Dutch night was so much fun! All the dishes were great. I will definitely be making my pea soup again. Next country is Turkey; Brent and I are doing the drink and potato dish. When it's our turn to host again Brent and I want to do East Indian. I did a ton of cooking this weekend; soup & doughnuts for Dutch night, 2 cakes for Brent's B-day and mushroom caps. I also re-potted a couple plants that were in dire need of more room to grow and started some flowers for our garden. I can't wait for SPRING!

Friday, Already?!?

Can't believe how fast this week has flown by! I think we're taking it easy tonight and maybe going out for supper. Tomorrow is going to be ridiculously busy... my list of things to do is SOOO long! We've pretty much run out of ever thing there is to run out of; laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap, garbage bags, etc, etc, let me just say the list is long.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY
-3.5 hr LSD bike
-2 hr LSD run
-laundry
-vacuum/house cleaning
-bottles to the depot
-clean garage
-groceries
-lunch w/ the Grandma's
-cook dishes for "Dutch Night"
-bottle wine
-develop pic's off the digital camera from September to present
-take the remainder of Jamie's stuff to his house
-bake a cake for Brent's B-day
-get gift for Brent's B-day...
... that's all I can think of right now.

But the weather is supposed to beautiful this weekend, so I can't wait to get a run in outside!

Yesterday I blew off swimming (I wrecked my goal, I know, I know)... but it was only because I stayed after the run to do weights again w/ Lori and Amber. We did 3 mile repeats yesterday. My first two were 6:50, then on the last one I sped up to 6:35. Felt good and strong for the whole workout.

REALLY belated B-day gift!

Brent intended to get me new running shoes for my b-day back in November... however I am a HUGE fan of the Nike, Air Pegasus shoe... have been since '97, and why mess with a good thing! 2007 model of the shoe has redesigned a lot of features of the shoe, and with rave reviews. So I've been putting up w/ miled out running shoes for 5 months now. This past weekend when we were in St. Albert I dropped by my favorite Running Room store to see if the 2007 had finally come in. They were in the store but weren't even out on the shelf yet!!! I got the first pair! Anyways, after running with them for a week I have absolutely not complaints! And I love the color (don't tell me it doesn't matter!).

Dylan has discovered a whole new world on the other side of the mirror!

Got Shit from Lori Last night

So when it comes to running and biking and heck, even swimming, I usually just fly by the seat of my pants pace wise... try to go by perceived effort, mentally battling things out in my head..."can I go faster?", "should I hold back and save more for the end?", "I don't want to finish wishing I could have gone harder...", etc, etc. What usually happens is I giver off the start, then mid point realize I've taken it out too hard, so I dial it back, then push through the pain at the end.

Actually I've been getting crap from Lori for a few things...
1) I need to learn to run S-L-O-W... again taking things out too hard.
2) I need to learn pace. I have trouble w/ my easy vs. steady vs. hard efforts... usually things just all meddle together. I guess that's why Brent got me a Garmin 305 for Christmas. Unfortunately most of our workouts are inside at the multiplex where the satellites can't hook up. If it EVER warms up I will be able to pay attention to my pace more. But as Lori warns, it can become obsessive compulsive... constantly looking at the Garmin. She only trains & races at perceived effort, not heart rate, not watts, not cadence, not pace. When you're as good as her, and experienced as her, you can do that. She told me I will never reach my running potential unless I start paying attention. Coming from someone who can run a 36 min 10 km during a Olympic distance tri, I better start paying attention!

Goal: Not to miss a workout for seven days.

Last night I didn't get to the bike workout on time; in-laws stopped by so I caught the last 20 min of the bike then did an extra time through the boot camp circuit to make up for it, "like a honest triathlete would do" is what Lori said when I told her my plans.

This morning I slept in b/c we were up late watching "the prestige"... pretty good movie, lots of plot turns that keep you wondering how it's going to end an who really is the bad guy. These late night movie viewings have got to stop! Sunday night we started watching Babel at 10 pm... and it was well past midnight before we got to bed. I usually am in bed by 9:30... so I'm really exhausted today. I really enjoyed Babel as well. Kind of reminded me of Crash. I'm not a huge movie fan, so for me to watch 2 movies in a week is not normal... and to like them is even more strange!

I think I have to re-set my goals... to not miss a work out for a week starting right now, until next Tuesday morning. Tonight after work is weights, run with Lori, and then swimming. I ran into my swim coach last night at the multiplex and she gave me shit for not showing up lately... so I'll really get in trouble if I don't go tonight!

WEIGHTS = 45 MIN
RUN = 60 MIN
SWIM = 60 MIN / 2100 M

...It's official...

So, as of this morning I am a Husky employee.

I just gave my resignation to my boss... I was so nervous, but thank goodness it's over! I guess I owe a BIG thank you to Kent, my former manager at Enbridge, for all the reference checks! I'm sure he was hoping that I would find a job soon so that people would quit calling him! And a "thank you" to Michelle Robinson for forwarding Husky positions to me!

Other news...
Brent is recovering quite well from getting his wisdom teeth removed. Although this morning he was hurting quite bad. Could it be from his skidoo trip to Ministickwan lake yesterday??? Brent describes his new look similar to that of a pocket gopher... You be the judge!!!

Back into the swig of things training wise this week. The past couple weeks have been messed up because of vacation, new puppy and Brent's surgery. I have also been avoiding the pool... for no good reason. I'm sure my swim coach is wondering what happened to me!

Up to the city tonight; Brent gets the old wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow morning. So tonight we feast at the Keg... it could be quite at while b/f Brent gets to chomp on some REAL food.

Here's your daily dose of Gauge...
